Analysis of the detailed steps involved in the action of expression of a gene under the control of the estrogen receptor showed that the processes were cyclical sequential and progressive. The steps involved in reversing the activation process were equally complex.Subsequent studies have shown that the epigenetic steps are also cyclical in their functioning.Specifically DNA methylation, once thought to be indelible, has now been shown to be dynamic and reversible.
