Menoprogen is an ancient TCM formula that contains semi-purified extracts of five well-known "herbal food" plants, which have been used as dietetic and medical materials in China for thousands year.Menoprogen was developed in China to treat menopausal symptoms, and is comprised of extracts the herbs Fructus Lycii (Lycium chinensis fruits, Chinese goji berries, Solanaceae); Semen Cuscutae (Cuscuta chinensis Lam, Convolulaceae), Radix Rehmanniae (Rehmannia glutinosa Libosch., Roots, Scrophulariaceae), Fructus Mori (Morus alba fruits, Moraceae) and Flos Carthami (Carthamus tinctorius L., Safflower, Asteraceae), which are commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine and are all described in either the Chinese Pharmacopoeia and/or the WHO Monographs.We evaluated the nutrition therapy effects of Menoprogen in the management of menopausal symptoms for aged female rats.Menoprogen can cause a dilation of the blood capillary, increase FSH receptors in follicular membrane, regulate paracrine and autocrine system of ovaries, and improve the function of the granulosa cells.
