Endogenous estrogen deficiency usually causes the systemic osteoporosis not only in long bones but also in jaw bones and exogenous estrogen can enhance the osteogenic potential of bone marrowderived mesenchymal stem cells. However, the effects of estrogen on the dentinogenesis and differentiation of dental stem cells have not been fully elucidated. In this presentation, we demonstrate that estrogen deficiency reduces the dentinogenic capacity and calcium deposition in rat incisors, and inhibits the odonto/osteogenic differentiation of DPSCs, while 17β-estradiol (E2) can upregulate the odonto/osteogenic capacity of DPSCs via activating NF-κB pathway. The effects of estrogen on other dental stem cells have also been investigated.Furthermore, the potential applications of estrogen in Endodontics and its potential pathway mechanism will be discussed.
