The pesticide chemist has a variety of options to choose from when it comes to sample injection modes. The more common injection mode is conventional splitless where the inlet is held at a constant temperature and a 1 μL injection is made.Another injection technique is temperature programmed injection, where the sample is introduced into a cold inlet and then the inlet temperature is rapidly programmed. The second technique is becoming more widely used although the complete understanding of the physical properties involved is not that clear. In order to either develop a new method for a new list of pesticides or improve the current method, the pesticide chemist may read the literature and see the optimum parameters listed in a publication and attempt to apply them to their particular list, or the preferred approach is to look at the physical properties of the constituents of the extract solution and determine the best injection technique.
