N-doped TiO2-NSs modified anode enhances electricity generation in MFC

  TiO2-NSs(nano sheets)had excellent biocompatibility with the outer membrane c-type cytochrome of Shewanella loihica PV4.TiO2-NSs/CP(carbon paper)was synthesized by hydrothermal reaction,and then calcined at different temperature(400 ℃,500 ℃,600 ℃ and 700 ℃)in NH3 atmosphere for 3 hours to obtain N-doped TiO2-NSs/CP electrode.When used as anode,the PV4 inoculated MFC(microbial fuel cells)with the anode calcined at 600℃ showed best performance with the maximum power output density of 665 mW·m-2,which was increased 147%compared to the bare CP.The electrochemical activity of CP and N-doped TiO2-NSs/CP for extracellular electron transfer of PV4 was characterized by CV and EIS,the CV plot of N-doped TiO2-NSs/CP had a pair obviously redox peaks with the midpoint potential Em=-0.286 V,which was in accordance with the reported Em value of OM c-type cytochrome from S.loihica PV4.In addition,Rct of N-doped TiO2-NSs/CP was lower from EIS measurement than bare CP corresponding to the result of CV.N-doped TiO2-NSs/CP with the unique morphology for electron transport,high electrochemical activity surface area and good biocompatibility for microbes growth,as well as lower cost is the useful material for MFC application in practice.
