Preparation and Characterization of Flexible Methylsilsesquioxane Xerogels

  Flexible methylsilsesquioxane xerogels were prepared via sol-gel process followed by ambient pressure drying with trimethoxymethylsilane (MTMS) and dimethoxydimethylsilane (DMDMS) as co-precursor,hydrochloric acid as catalyst, both water and methyl alcohol (MeOH) as solvent,n-hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) as a phase separation controller, propylene oxide (PO) as a gelation agent.The resultant xerogels were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR),scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and nitrogen adsorption/desorption analysis (BET), mercury porosimetry,uniaxial compression test and droplet angle measurement.The influence of the MTMS/DMDMS volume ratio,CTAC content, PO content and hydrochloric acid concentration on the micro-macrostructure and properties of the xerogels were investigated.The results showed that the amount of methyl group, which was decided by the volume ratio of MTMS and DMDMS, had a significant impact on the flexibility and strength of the resultant xerogels.Meanwhile the amount of CTAC, PO and solvent and the concentration of hydrochloric acid affected the morphology of the gel framework.When the volume ratio of MTMS and DMDMS was 3, the methylsilsesquioxane xerogels possessed low density, high porosity, good flexibility, enough strength and super-hydrophobicity, which can be applied in the fields such as separation of oil and water.
