In our previous studies we had shown that during sleep cortical sensory areas switch to processing of interoceptive signals from visceral organs.It was not clear how visceral information may reach those cortical areas which in wakefulness were involved in visual or somatosensory function.It was known that in spinal cord (SC) visceral and somatosensory afferents terminate on the same neurons.There was a question how the brain manages to distinguish which information is coming if it was transferred by the same neuronal fibers.
