Benzodiazepines are widely prescribed psychotropic drugs indicated for the management of anxiety, sleeping disorders, muscle spasms and seizures.Short-term therapeutic doses of these central nervous system depressants are generally safe and highly effective.High dosages over prolonged periods, however, can lead to tolerance, physical and psychological dependence, and severe withdrawal symptoms.These medications are subject to abuse, particularly by individuals with a history of drug and/or alcohol addiction, and are classified accordingly as Schedule Ⅳ controlled substances by the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).
