Atmospheric corrosion involves simultaneous electrochemical,chemical or physical processes in three phases (solid,liquid,and gas) and two interfaces (solid/liquid and liquid/gas).With the availability and development of interface sensitive analytical techniques it has become possible to perform molecular in situ analyses of all phases and interfaces involved in atmospheric corrosion.This lecture will present a selection of results from our most recent research efforts to provide molecular information during atmospheric corrosion.Copper and zinc substrates have been exposed to a humidity-containing atmosphere to which carboxylic acids have been added.The initial stages of atmospheric corrosion have been followed in situ by four independently acting in situ techniques:infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRAS,surface chemical composition) combined with the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM,mass variations),sum frequency generation (SFG,identification of species at the solid/liquid or liquid/gas interfaces) and atomic force microscopy (AFM,surface topography).
