Most exposed granulite-facies terranes contain quartzo-feldspathic gneisses whose protoliths may either be igneous,or sedimentary,or both.Since the bulk of the lower continental crust is likely composed of such rocks,their correct recognition and interpretation is a precondition for proposing tectonic models.We present examples of controversially interpreted rock assemblages from high-grade terranes in southern India,Sri Lanka,and the Limpopo belt of South Africa to show that careful study of field relationships,zircon morphology and geochronology can avoid misinterpretation of such rocks.
