The Sound and the Fury is one of the finest works in the tragic mood to appear in America.Faulkner is the only American who seems capable of rivaling James Joyce. It requires of its reader an alert intelligence and keen sympathy. It is a nove about a Southern family of descending social position. Its about the fall of man,and more specifically, the fall of the Southern man.The novel is the same story told by the three brothers from differnet points of view,in which their sister is the heroine, and beneath the words.By analyzing the structure of the novel and the mind-style of the three brothers,we can understand their personalities.Greatly influenced by the parents, especially the mother, the four children suffer a lot.Benjy,an idiot, his words are most of the nature, and much of Benjys text consists of quotations from others, showing his mental retardation. From his quotations,we know, his isolation arises from his inability to understand verbal communication. He is confined physically.Quentins language is full of abstract terms:time, hope, desire…which are most his fathers words, and seemed to be internalized by him.His words show he suffers from mental illness. He is abandoned by his mother, and then turns to his father, which leads to his drowning himself.Hie is confined by his fathers viewpoint.Jason, the only child"loved" by his mother, his presentation shows he returns continuously to his mothers possessive and perverted love.He suffers from paranoia, and is confined by his mothers love.Caddy, seen indirectly by his brothers, finds a tragic outlet from the family repression in a sexual way, which ends in failure.Faulkner created flesh-and-blood people by using suitable words and style to show their minds, and the characters speak for themselves.
