According to Turbomachinery International, March to April 2010, in the previous issue, experts from Solar Turbines introduced gas turbine corrosion and explored some types of corrosion. In this issue they explore more about the mechanism of corrosion. Vulcanization is the reaction of forming sulfides and oxides between a metal and an oxygen-containing sulfur-containing medium. Vulcanization attacks quickly degrade metal properties. Oxidation and hot corrosion issues in gas turbines are typically associated with high temperatures within the combustor and turbine sections. Compressor coating can effectively protect the compressor blades from water-soluble corrosion. Oxidation is not usually a major concern.
