At the end of 2010, Origin of Human Civilization of Pottery and Metallurgy and Rice Cultivation: World-class Archaeological Cave Xianrendong and Diaotonghuan in Wannian Country, a major illustrated book published by the Fine Arts Publishing House made its debut in Nanchang as scheduled. Professor Yan Wenming, a famous archaeologist from Peking University, Ofer bar-Yosef, an academician of American Academy of Sciences attended the ceremony and spoke highly of this illustrated book. This is the ever first illustrated book comprehensively recording the whole archaeological excavation process for two caves in Wannian County, Jiangxi Province, highlighting two creations, namely agricultural rice cultivation and pottery.
Xianrendong and Diaotonghuan are ancient culture sites of the early Neolithic. In the 1960s and 1990s, archaeologists carried out archaeological excavations on the sites for five times. The Sino-US Agricultural Archaeological Team, led by Prof. Yan Wenming and the famous American archaeologist Doctor Manis, conducted two scientific excavations which enhanced the two caves’ historical and scientific value to an unprecedented height. In the two sites, there is a complete and clear deposition from the late Paleolithic to the Mesolithic and then to the early Neolithic. Such a discovery is rare in China, even in the world. It fully reveals how human transited from the Paleolithic to the Neolithic and how the Neolithic occurred. This is always a major academic topic in the world. Furthermore, in the sites the Archaeological Team members also discovered brown ware 17,000 years before present and rice phytolith 12,000 years before present, which advances the history of rice by 5,000 years. Therefore, Xianrendong and Diaotonghuan became world-class cave sites and Wannian County became one of the earliest rice cultivation sites in the world.
To further demonstrate this major archaeological achievement, a compiling group constituted of relevant experts spent one year in compiling this large illustrated book Origin of Human Civilization of Pottery and Metallurgy and Rice Cultivation: World-class Archaeological Cave Xianrendong and Diaotonghuan in Wannian Country. This book abandoned the old narration-dominated mode, integrating science, knowledge and fun. The album has about 130,000 words and 1,280 pictures and is edited in precise Chinese and English, thereby enabling readers to know the archaeology, history and civilization.
