On August 29, 2013, a conversation between Ms EVA, Cultural Attache of the Sweden Embassy in China and Yang Hongying, the famous writer of many children' s books took place in Shangdong Pavilion at 20th Beijing International Book Fair. The event was hosted by Shangdong Publishing Group Ltd, Shangdong Publishing and Media Ltd and Tomorrow Publishing House. Ms Eva and Ms Yang both attended the discussion and exchanged their views on many subjects, such as publishing children’s books in China and Sweden, the criterion of first-class children' s books, the successful experiences of reading promotion activities in both countries and the influence of Chinese children' s books around the world. Mr Yang Weimin, the Executive Editor of China Press and Publishing Network presided at this activity.
Many publishers and journalists who participated in this event took this as an opportunity to consider the publishing industry in China of children’s books and to perfect their criteria. Those who took part in this activity also thought the conversation had opened a new window and expressed the wish that in the future they would be able to read more internationally competitive children' s books such as The Diary of A Laughing Cat.
The General Manager of Shangdong Publishing and Media Ltd, Mr Liu Qiang spoke highly of this discussion and considered this activity as another useful attempt that Shangdong Publishing Group had made to communicate with the world and put SARFT's call for 'Communicate internationally' into practice.
As a result of increasingly frequent international publishing activities, more and more first-rate children' s books in contemporary China have attracted attention around the world, and contemporary writers of children’s books also become more and more influential world widely, for instance, Ms Yang Hongying. Children' s books publishing industry in China which is now facing a new round of opportunity and challenge in a highly developed publishing world.
