在现代中国,“自由主义者”并不是这样号称的知识分子群体自己叫响的。它广为人知,要到四十年代末美国官方有关中美关系的白皮书发表,也就是这个群体的实际政治影响根本削弱之后。白皮书对那些对即将诞生的民主政权抱观望态度、对国民党彻底失望、倾向西方现代文化的所谓中间人士,用了这个称呼。
In modern China, “liberals” are not the ones who call themselves so-called intellectual groups themselves. It is widely known that after the official White Paper on Sino-U.S. Relations in the United States was published in the late 1940s that the actual political influence of this group was fundamentally weakened. The White Book uses this term for those so-called middlemen who are on the lookout for a forthcoming democratic government and thoroughly disappointed the Kuomintang and tend towards Western modern culture.
