利用杂交优势是提高农作物产量和改进产品品質的重要措施之一。在生产上利用杂交种时,先要配制大量的杂交种子,而制种又要先通过母本去雄这一关。去雄是一項十分繁重的工作。雌雄同花的作物(高粱)比雌雄同株異花的作物(玉米),去雄时要求的技术性更强,用的劳动量也就更大。人工去雄不仅費时耗力,增加种子生产成本;如果去雄不及时、不彻底,还会降低杂交种的質量,影响增产效果。所以近年来,雄性不育的特性便日益为育种工作者所重視,并作为育种的一个重要手段积极加以利用。
