辛弃疾其人其词于二十世纪总是被推向至尊地位。这除了辛氏自身特殊成就外,恐怕与‘剪不断,理还乱’的民族意识颇有些牵连。因为两个命题——爱国词人与爱国词,几乎已成为另类禁区,任何人都未敢说一个‘不’字,而且‘爱国’与‘豪放’二者之间一经划上等号,也就更加甚么都不需要说了。两顶桂冠——‘爱国词人’与‘豪放派领袖’,皆二十世纪所创制。给辛忠敏公戴上究竟合适与不合适,这一问题目前也许还无法说清,但与之相关所出现某些具体问题,诸如只看表层不看深层,或者只看一面不看两面等问题,我以为还是应当检讨的。
