The total cost of the ERS-1 Microwave Imaging Earth Resources Satellite to be produced by ESA is estimated to be US $ 465 million. France will bear 22% of the space and will be approved by the French cabinet meeting in June. The French government’s approval to participate in the development of the ERS-1 satellite was decided before satellite hardware was started. The satellite is expected to be launched in April 1989. Estimated working life is two years. The main missions of ERS-1 are the observation of ocean, frozen earth and coastal areas using instruments such as synthetic aperture radar, airflow scatterometer, radar altimeter and tracing scanning radiometer.
