The hypothesis of Jouvet sleep mechanism, based on electrophysiology and biochemistry, has played an important role in the past few decades. It is generally accepted that some neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, norepinephrine, and acetylcholine, are of paramount importance in regulating sleep-wakefulness in mammals. In addition to neurotransmitters, some researchers recently pointed out that some neuropeptides also play a role in the mechanism of sleep regulation. One neuropeptide, delta-sleep-inducing peptide (DSIP), was isolated from rabbit brain hemodialysis dialysate that elicited sleep in the middle of the thalamus. To rabbits and rats intraventricular injection of DSIP, compared with the control group given DSIP isoforms, EEG showed fusiform
