Japan’s Ministry of Finance and Economics declared that Japan’s foreign trade surplus dropped by 2.9% in 1988 to US$77.39 billion. Last year, Japan’s exports increased by 15.6% to reach 264.87 billion U.S. dollars, and imports rose by 25.4% to 187.48 billion U.S. dollars. In December alone, Japan’s foreign trade surplus increased by 12% over the same period of the previous year to 9.65 billion U.S. dollars; exports grew by 11.6% to 26.08 billion U.S. dollars, while imports increased by 11.3% to 16.43 billion U.S. dollars. Japan’s trade surplus with its largest trading partner, the United States, fell by 9.9% last year to US$47.61 billion. Japan’s exports to the United States increased by 7.2% to 89.61 billion U.S. dollars
