The year of the Dragon, the year of the Snake, each Chinese New Year is a time of celebration. It’s also a time to honor the year’s 2)designated Zodiac animal. This ancient calendar follows a 12-year cycle, with each year named after one of 12 animals: the Rat, the Ox, the Tiger, the Rabbit, the Dragon, the Snake, the Horse, the Sheep, the Monkey, the Rooster, the Dog, and the Pig.
The Chinese Zodiac has an ancient and mysterious origin. According to legend, Buddha invited all of the animals in the kingdom for a New Year’s feast, but only 12 animals answered his invitation. And, as their reward, Buddha named a year after each one, creating the Chinese animal zodiac.
The year in which you are born is said to determine your personality, your romantic life, even your professional success. So far so good.
The Rat
According to our Chinese 3)soothsayers, those of you born in the year of the Rat possess a gift for passion. You 4)exude sexuality and charm. So, maybe those Chinese wise men never saw a rat firsthand. Highly unlikely.
Anyway, rat people possess other qualities. Qualities more 5)in keeping with the creature we love to hate. Above all else, the average rat person is thought to 6)embody the pioneer spirit. They love to be 7)in the thick of the action. That’s right, rat people, you are the super achievers of the Chinese 8)astrological world.
Still, the parallel starts getting a little 9)strained when mealtime comes around. Rats, you see, eat anything, from soap, to paint chips and anything in between. Anyway, according to the ancients, 10)junk food just isn’t on the menu if you’re born under the sign of the rat. You rat people have a real taste for fine living, especially when it comes to food. But, come to think of it, so do regular rats. Even the newest and trendiest restaurants have their fair share of unwelcome guests 11)scuttling around out back. Indeed rats, like rat people, have a highly 12)discerning talent. They can detect minute amounts of poison in food, even if the poison is one millionth of the weight of the meal.
But when it comes to love, being a rat also carries a price. You’re just way too 13)cunning for your own good. In matters of the heart, too much calculation never brings the water to the boil. So, sorry, though you’re sexy, you’ll never rate as the most passionate of them all. But at least you’ll know you’ve got the skills to always come out on top.
