ND_5型机车是1984年10月开始配属南京铁路分局的,到现在南京东机务段已配属该型机车150台,由埠蚌、南京东、南翔机务段共同运用,担当着津浦南段(徐州—蚌埠—南京东)、宁沪线、沪杭线的货物列车牵引任务。ND_5型机车单机功率大,一次整备作业运行距离长,适合于牵引长交路重载列车。上海铁路局根据ND_5型机车的这些特点,提高了机车牵引定数(下行由3500t提高到3800t),压缩了运行时分,调整了机车交路,改变了机车运用方式,实行“长交路、轮乘制”,使机车的运用效率有了较大提高,取得了很好的经济效益和
