One Hundred Years of Solitude is an important work by Colombian writer García Márquez, a fantastic novel based on the life of Latin America. Since its publication, it has been translated into not only multi-national languages but also 1982 Nobel Prize for Literature. Daddy Dad, a novella by contemporary Chinese writer Han Shaogong, is a representative piece of “Roots Literature” rising in China in the 1980s. Though the two works describe different stories occurring on two different lands, many people appraise that the works of Han Shaogong’s roots-seeking period are influenced by Marquez. The authenticity of the origin is not investigated here. This article focuses on the novel National history and spiritual reflection to compare two works.
