Political rituals have a powerful role in mobilizing people into social movements and much research has been done in this area. The research here is aimed at a topic that has been overlooked: the failure of political rituals. Irving Goffman’s ritual interaction theory and Randall Collins’s theory of emotional sociology provide a theoretical framework for the failure of political rituals. Through the review of the first years of the “Cultural Revolution”, we have examined the mood swings of political ceremonies under specific time and conditions. These swings created negative emotions in political ceremonies, and these negative emotions made people gradually estranged from the “Cultural Revolution” “. It is important to have a personal background in order to be represented on the political stage, so once a person’s background ceases to exist, his centrality in the political arena will fall apart. The negative consequences of political rites in the ”Cultural Revolution“ are to make people no longer have illusions about political rites and their enthusiasm for ”Cultural Revolution" is also diminishing. All of this has had a profound impact on the political situation in China in the following years.
