Mannitol is often used to reduce intracranial pressure, but its long-term use in brain trauma is controversial. In 24 patients with severe traumatic brain injury, the authors observed an intravenous injection of mannitol 0.5 g / kg on intracranial pressure, cerebral perfusion pressure and cerebral blood flow. Cerebral blood flow was calculated before and after intravenous administration of ~ (133) xenon using mannitol 10 to 20 minutes later. Mannitol injection significantly increased cerebral blood flow by 17.2% (from 47.6 ± 4.4 ml / 100 g / min to 55.8 ± 4.8 ml / 100 g / min) while increasing cerebral perfusion pressure and intracranial pressure.
