Due to the accident at the Soviet Chernobyl nuclear power station, people’s attention is now focused on the necessity of nuclear power plant safety measures. However, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) Power Reactor Information System (PRIS), the accident did not cause any countries to stop building nuclear power plants or stop putting the completed power plants into operation. Nuclear power now accounts for more than 15% of the world’s total electricity generation; in some countries, this percentage is as high as 50%-70%. By the end of 1986, 394 power reactors were integrated into the grid in 26 countries, generating 270,232 megawatts of power. There were 21 reactors newly integrated into the grid during the year, with a total generating capacity of 20938 MW. The only one closed in 1986
