在一般读者的心目中,尹瘦石是个画家,是个以画马名世的画家。其实瘦石公不仅是个画家,还是一位书家,一位颇具书卷气的书家。他的字,隽秀健拔,平淡自然,不事雕琢,不尚奇巧,行笔流畅,信笔而书,字里行间流出一股清气,秀气。细细品味他的书作,恰似品味江南的绿茶,青翠、甘苦、清香。作为一个画家,他的画——不论是四十年代的历史人物画,人物肖像画,还是五六十年代以来的鞍马人物或马图,已经有不少人写过介绍评论,这里就从略了。不过有关他的字,他的习字临帖,他的书法嗜好、鉴赏、收藏,似乎还很少有人谈及。应《中国书法》编者之约,笔者与瘦石公作了一番长谈,在此作一简要的介绍。谈起习字,瘦石公告诉我说,他在青少年时代,做梦也没有想到要当一名书法家,所以习字临帖,对他来说,只是一门「日课」,或者说是学画的余兴和陪衬,而从来没有系统地下过苦功。小学时期摹写过大楷,职业中学时期临写过颜真卿的法帖,仅此而已。尹瘦石对书法产生较大兴趣的时期是四十年代。当时抗日的炮火,把全国的一大批著名文化人士
