Recently, the use of small-size nozzle tests has identified promising new carbon-phenol ablative materials. These materials are made of short viscose fibers, polyacrylonitrile fibers and pitch-based carbon cloth. A 4-inch throat submerged nozzle designed for a 48-inch carbon engine in a Jet Propulsion Laboratory to identify 5 different designs with 20 ablative materials. This propellant (polybutadiene acryl acrylonitrile) cartridge, used on a solid rocket engine of 3,200 pounds, provides combustor pressure-time conditions similar to the first 45 seconds of a space shuttle’s solid rocket motor operation .
