Writing a junior high school economics textbook is by no means my motto. Ralph Freeman, the head of my MIT faculty, came to me in 1945 and said to me: Paul, there is a suggestion that you can not refuse. One year’s economics course is a compulsory course for MIT students. However, students feel economics dull. How much time you need to give you, and write a new economics book you will love. It can be as simple as you want, including topics that you think are important. I’m sure it will be a bestseller. More importantly, you will contribute to the education of a generation. So you will have two kinds of honor. Paul Samuelson, an economic theorist who has cultivated new fields of boasting mathematical economy; and Paul Samuelson, who has done its part in understanding the intellectual and rational aspects of economics among citizens.
