紫禁城武英殿位于西华门内,建于明永乐十八年(1420年),占地面积约1.2万平方米,主要建筑有武英门、武英殿、敬恩殿、凝道殿、焕章殿、浴德堂等,共60余间,建筑面积6500多平方米,是皇宫西南部的一组重要建筑群。皇宫建筑讲究对称。武英殿位于太和殿之右,与之相对称的就是太和殿左面的文华殿。武英殿近水,它的西面、南面都被内金水河所环绕。武英门前有座三梁的石桥。为何以金水河环绕武英殿?明代太监刘若愚著《明宫史》说:“是河也,非谓鱼泳在藻,以资游赏,又非故为曲折,以耗物料,盖恐有意外火灾则此水赖焉。天启四年六科科灾,六年武英殿西油漆作灾,皆得此水之济。”武英殿在明代曾是皇帝斋居和经常临御的便殿。皇后生日时,也曾在这里接受命妇的朝贺。在明清交替之际,李自成曾在此仓促登基。武英殿在清政权入主紫禁城之初,曾经是清廷政务活动的重要场所。因为紫禁城当时许多宫殿都被火烧毁了,唯有此处宫殿幸存。康熙皇帝曾在这里居住过一年,此后这里成为宫廷修书处。
