中卫全县已有102所中小学开展了勤工俭学活动,占全县中小学总数的67%;有农、林基地2个,土地835亩;校办工厂13个,校办商业网点10个;县勤工俭学办公室自办经济实体2个.全县勤工俭学固定资产总值达83.9万元,校办企业从业人员达148人.许多学校还组织学生收集废旧物品,采集草籽、中草药,给农场插秧、收割,为粮库装米,靠“勤”增加了学校的收入.到1990年,全县勤工俭学年总产值达250万元,纯收入达34万元,全县用于改善办学条件的资金达10.9万元,用于解决教职工集体福利的资金达6.9万元.1988年西园中学被国家教委树为“全国勤工俭学先进集体”,1989年,西园中学、中卫一中被自治区树为“全区勤工俭学先进集体”.
