OBJECTIVE: To conduct a bibliometric analysis of the literature on the topic of preventive HIV counseling in foreign countries and to clarify the characteristics of the existing research and find out the direction to be studied. Methods Five foreign language databases were searched by using structured keywords. The data was published from the start of the database to May 31, 2014. The included documents were classified according to the time of publication, authors, periodicals, research types, specific topics and theoretical basis. Results A total of 506 related articles were included in the period 1988-2014. There were 2320 authors in total and 3.88% (90) authors published 3 or more articles. An average of 4 articles were published per person. The overall rate of cooperation among authors was 94.27% (477/506), showing an overall trend of increase over the years. Seven core journals identified HIV counseling, accounting for 55.14% (279/506) in the cross-sectional study and 21.74% (110/506) in the experimental study. Specific topics include the factors influencing the HIV counseling process and its effectiveness, the effectiveness of the intervention, the intervention Methods, cost-benefit analysis, policy and ethics issues; no specific HIV counseling study has been retrieved. CONCLUSIONS: The number of HIV counseling and research in foreign countries rapidly increased from 1988 to 2014, and the scope and depth of HIV counseling and research continued to expand. The HIV-counseling cost-effectiveness and in-depth exploration of seeker experience and satisfaction through theoretical research needed to be further studied.
