Only about 1 in 5 kids said they talk to their parents when they’re upset, but more than 75% of kids said they’d like their parents to help them in times of stress. Here’s how kids said parents could help:
·Talk together.
·Help them feel better, like with a hug.
·Give them attention; do something together.
·Help them solve the problem.
·Stop yelling (喊叫).
·Don’t make them feel worse.
·Help get their minds off the problem.
·Pray with them.
Sometimes parents might feel like kids don’t want them to get involved (介入). That’s why it’s good to talk to a parent—even if all you want to say is that this problem is going on and that you’d like to try to solve it on your own. More often, you might want your mom or dad to offer ideas or at least a little encouragement.
You can return the favor by being nice to your mom or dad the next time he or she is feeling stressed out. You could draw a card, give a hug, or clean your room without being asked. Then your parents may be too surprised to feel stressed!

A group of frogs were traveling through the woods, and two of them fell into a deep pit (矿井). All the other frogs gathered around the pit. When they saw how deep the pit was, they told the two frogs that they were as good as dead.
The two frogs ignored the comments (评论) and tried to jump up out of the pit with all of their might. The other frogs kept telling them to stop, and that they were as good as dead. Finally, one of the frogs accepted what the other frogs were saying and gave up. He fell down and died. The other frog continued to jump as hard as he could. Once again, the crowd of frogs yelled at him to stop the pain and just die. He jumped even harder and finally made it out. When he got out, the other frogs said, “Did you not hear us?” The frog explained to them that he was deaf. He thought they were encouraging him all the time.
This story teaches us two lessons:
1. There is power of life and death in the tongue. An encouraging word to someone who is down can lift them up and help them make it through the day.
2. A destructive word to someone who is down can be what it takes to kill them. Be careful of what you say. Speak life to those who cross your path.
The power of words ... it is sometimes hard to understand that an encouraging word can go such a long way. Anyone can speak words that tend to rob another of the spirit to continue in difficult times.
( )1. What did the other frogs tell the two frogs when they saw the deep pit?
A. They were hopeful.
B. They were hopeless.
C. They could save them.
D. They were helpful.
( )2. What does the underlined word “ignored” mean in Chinese?
A. 接受了 B. 服从了
C. 不理会 D. 不明白
( )3. How many frogs were still in the deep pit at last?
A. 1 B. 2
C. 3 D. 4
( )4. How did the frog explain to the others after he got out of the deep pit?
A. He didn’t hear them at all.
B. He was blind and deaf.
C. Thank you for encouraging.
D. Why didn’t you help me?
( )5. What’s the best title of this passage?
A. Be Careful of the Deep Pit.
B. Two Frogs Fall into a Deep Pit.
C. The Power of Words.
D. How to Get out of a Deep Pit.

About ten years ago when I was a student in college, I was working as an intern (实习生) at my University’s Museum of Natural History. One day while working at the cash register in the gift shop, I saw an elderly couple come in with a little girl in a wheelchair.
As I looked closer at this girl, I saw her sitting in her chair. I then realized she had no arms or legs, just a head, neck and body. She was wearing a little white dress with red polka dots.
As the couple wheeled her up to me I was looking down at the register. I turned my head toward the girl and gave her a wink(眨眼). As I took the money from her grandparents, I looked back at the girl, who was giving me the cutest, largest smile I have ever seen. All of a sudden her handicap was gone and all I saw was this beautiful girl, whose smile just melted me and gave me a completely new sense of what life is all about. She took me from a poor, unhappy college student and brought me into her world: a world of smiles, love and warmth. That was ten years ago. I’m a successful business person now and whenever I get down and think about the troubles of the world, I think about that little girl and the remarkable(卓越的) lesson about life that she taught me.

Maybe God wants us to meet a few wrong people before meeting the right one so that when we finally meet the right person, we will know how to be grateful for that gift.
When the door of happiness closes, another opens, but often times we look so long at the closed door that we don’t see the one which has been opened for us.
The best kind of friend is the kind you can swing with, never say a word, and then walk away feeling like it was the best conversation you’ve ever had.
It’s true that we don’t know what we’ve got until we lose it, but it’s also true that we don’t know what we’ve been missing until it arrives.
Don’t go for looks; they can deceive (欺骗). Don’t go for wealth, even that fades away. Go for someone who makes you smile because it takes only a smile to make a dark day seem bright. Find the one that makes your heart smile.
May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough experiences to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human, enough hope to bring you joy.
Always put yourself in another’s shoes. If you feel that it hurts you, it probably hurts the other person, too. The happiest people don’t necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way.
The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past, you can’t get on well in life until you let go of past failures and heartaches.
When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. Live your life so that when you die, you’re the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying.
( )1. How do you feel when you meet the right person finally?
A. Happy. B. Sad.
C. Grateful. D. Nervous.
( )2. What does the writer think of the best kind of friend?
A. The person can swing with you and never say a word.
B. The person who often opens the door for you.
C. The person is smiling when you are crying.
D. The person can make you sweet.
( )3. What does the underlined phrase “fades away” mean in Chinese?
A. 衰老 B. 散尽
C. 凋零 D. 枯萎
( )4. How can you get on well in life?
A. Let go of past failures and heartaches.
B. Be based on a forgotten past.
C. Have enough hope to bring you joy.
D. Put yourself in another’s shoes.
( )5. What’s the best title of this passage?
A. How to Be Careful
B. How to Be Grateful
C. How to Look Out
D. How to Make Happiness

Here’s something people don’t often think about: Helping helps even when there’s not a problem.
Getting in the habit of giving and receiving help build good relationships. It makes us feel more care. It stops stress from building because we know someone else is thinking about us. And if there is a problem, we’re sharing it before it gets too big. It just feels great to help.
Try these small practice at home and see how they make you feel:
*Help your little brother or sister with a homework problem.
*Help your dad prepare dinner.
*Help your mom carry living goods.
*Offer to do a chore that’s not usually yours “just because.”
There’s more to it than just feeling good: Kindness is contagious. It can create more kindness. So you might start to notice your family (or friends) reaching out to help more.
Just don’t fall into the trap (陷阱) of expectation. If we help out only because we expect the other person to do something in return, we will probably end up feeling disappointed and angry instead of happy and fulfilled. So decide to help simply because of the positive feelings it creates. Then, when someone else does something nice for you (and it will happen), it’s a wonderful surprise.
Giving and receiving is one of the most basic friendship skills. With a good network of supportive people, we are less stressed. We feel loved and understood, so we’re better able to solve problems, bounce back from disappointments and try again.

The worker I hired to repair my house had just finished a difficult first day on the job. A broken wheel made him an hour late; his ladder fell down when he was painting the roof and now his old truck wouldn’t start. With each problem he shouted angrily, more at himself than at his things. As I drove him home, the man didn’t say a word.
I tried talking to the man to kill time. I managed to find out that he had come up from Blue Hills in Victoria with his family six months ago to find a job. This was his first job since moving here. I now knew why his price was lower than any other worker I could find in the local newspaper. He really needed the job. His clothes told me as much.
On arriving, much to my surprise, he invited me in to meet his family. As we walked through his front garden, he suddenly stopped at a small tree and placed his hands on it. Then, when he opened the door he completely changed. Instead of his troubled face, there was now a warm smile, hugs for his two children and a kiss for his wife.
The following day, I asked him about the tree.
“That’s my trouble tree,” he answered. “Work troubles aren’t welcome at home with my wife and the children. So I hang them on that tree every night when I come home. Then in the morning I pick them up again.”
“And you know what else?” he said smiling, “The next morning I find that there aren’t as many as I remember hanging up the night before.”

A. To get good luck.
B. To leave his trouble outside.
