The best way to start a telephone conver
sation[对话] is to explain that you are not a native English speaker. I recommend[推荐] you saying,“I’m still learning the language.（我还在学这门语言。）” Or, “English is not my first language.（英语不是我的母语。）”
After the person is aware that English is not your first language, it is important to ask them to speak slowly. The question could sound like this:“Could you please speak slowly?（你能说慢一点吗？）”
If they need more clarification[解释], you could
say, “I don’t understand. Would you speak more slowly please?（我听不懂。你能再说慢一点吗？）” If you are still having trouble, further clarify[阐明] with this: “I’m still having trouble understanding. Would you repeat that in a different way?（我还是不太明白。你能用另一种说法重复一遍吗？）” This question will give you time to carefully listen to the speaker repeat the ideas he or she is communicating[告知] to you.
If the conversation has progressed and the speaker speeds up again, you can remind the speaker to slow down. Remind the speaker to slow down by saying: “You’ll have to speak slowly. I’m still learning English.（请务必慢慢说，我还在学习英语。）”
If the person has not responded[作出反应]
to any of your requests to speak slowly, I recommend that you start speaking in your first language. This will make it very clear to the speaker that you do not understand.
