In the mid-19th century, with the awakening of the British Empire colony, a large group of Western adventurers roamed the land of India, China, Japan, South Korea, Sudan and Myanmar, and Phyllis Bitto was one of them. His exploration tool was a camera in his hand. He used his lens to direct the newly opened east. He curiously looked into the customs of wherever he went and recorded the cruelty and the scars left over from the war. Japan is the country where he has been staying for a long time. It has left today’s people precious images of the changes in the Japanese feudal era and also responded to all the Westerners’ imagination about the East.
