根据国家安全生产监督管理局的数据:从2001年到2004年,中国发生一次死亡10人以上的特大煤矿事故188宗,平均每7.4天一宗。2004年,全国的矿难死亡人数达6027人,占全世界矿难死亡总人数的80%,每百万吨死亡率为3.96,而美国是0.039。2005年的上半年,国家拿出了30亿进行煤矿的技术改造,安监局升格为安监总局,但形势依然严峻,上半年的死亡人数比去年同期上升了3.3%,达到2672人。从2005年1月7日到8月19日,可统计的遇难人数已有3000左右。
