在六朝早期的佛教造像中,佛的形象往往是通过佛“本生”故事画1和“佛传”故事画来进行表现的。在北朝到隋代这一时期,也是第一个佛教故事画的兴盛时期,敦煌莫高窟现存的北凉到北周的40多个洞窟之中,就有17个洞窟绘有故事画。2在佛教最初的创立时期,佛教为了争取信众弘扬佛法,所以对这些民间故事加以改造,并且吸收和利用,从而造就了佛前世修行的本生故事。根据“本生故事”编撰成册的经书被称为《本生经》,而后又通过经书的传播,则绘制成相关的《本生图》,也就是我们现在看到的一系列“本生故事画”。“现存巴利文《本生经》成书于公元5世纪,有547则本生故事”。
In the early Buddhist statues of the Six Dynasties, the image of the Buddha was usually manifested through the story painting of Buddha “Benji ” and the story of “Buddha Biography”.
