In the late Qing Dynasty, the two ports of Shanghai and Hong Kong were the only two hub ports in China’s coastal area with close trade ties with each other. In the area of foreign trade of import and export of goods in Shanghai, Hong Kong became the third or second largest direct import port of Shanghai port or a direct supplier. In the field of export of native products at the port of Shanghai, Hong Kong is only the fourth or fifth largest direct export destination or indirect transit site of the Shanghai Port. Despite the differences in the mechanisms governing the development of the import and export trade between the two places, the enhancement of trade links between Shanghai and Hong Kong has made both of them the leaders in bringing about China’s economic modernization.
