Prevent ore blockage in gravity transport of tailings pipelines, the common method is to add a lot of lime. Lime affects the rheological properties of a slurry “carrier” that delivers coarse particles under heterogeneous conditions. This paper describes the effect of lime on the critical deposition velocity and friction head loss of the tailings slurry at the Higmont Mining Company. Extruded viscometers were used to test the surface chemical changes caused by the addition of a large amount of lime. Increasing the pH of the tailings slurry from 8.4 to 11.5 will reduce the critical sediment flow rate from approximately 3.2 m / s to 1.7 m / s.
