Long-term use of anti-epileptic drugs (AEDS) on children’s growth and development will have a certain impact. AEDS mainly affects children’s bone metabolism, thyroid function and body weight. Long-term use of AEDS may cause varying degrees of bone metabolism, mainly bone mineral density decline, bone biochemical abnormalities (reduced bone formation or increased bone resorption). In addition, long-term use of AEDS can cause thyroid hormone levels decreased, causing subclinical hypothyroidism. Weight gain or loss also affects children’s growth and development, but the impact of the process is more slow, clinical manifestations vary, often overlooked. Therefore, regular monitoring of children with epilepsy growth and development to improve their quality of life is of great significance.
