Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the bladder is rare, accounting for approximately 3 to 11.7% of all bladder cancers, with a 5-year survival rate of 1.9 to 48%. Flow cytometry is used to detect the nuclear DNA content of tumor cells and is often used to predict the degree of malignancy of various tumors. In 1983, Hedley et al. extracted nuclei from paraffin-embedded pathological specimens and measured the nuclear DNA content using flow cytometry. The authors studied primary bladder cancer according to the new method described by Hedley et al. to understand the relationship between tumor cell nuclear DNA type and tumor recurrence and patient survival.
