Independently derived Canadian backcrosses containing the adult leaf rust resistant gene Lr34 also showed resistance to stripe rust. The resistance genes for the two rusts in these lines must be closely linked. Other backcross derived lines that were selected for resistance to stripe rust in Australia also showed some resistance in seed selection. The above shows that the two groups of materials have the same gene whose donor antigens are known to have long-lasting resistance to stripe rust or leaf rust. Each persistent source may contain inferences about closely linked genes and is of great value in understanding the genetic aspects of rust resistance, gene manipulation and development and utilization of anti-rust genes in agriculture.
