梅勒的代表作为战争小说《裸者与死者》(The Naked and the Dead,1946)。 2007年1月,84岁高龄的梅勒推出了自己最后一部小说《林中城堡》(The Castle in the Forest)。

On November 10, 2007, Mailer died of acute renal failure at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. In January 2007, 84-year-old Mailer introduced his last novel, The Castle in the Forest. As soon as the novel was published, it welcomed the rave reviews. The New Yorker commented that as a style writer, if Charlie was sometimes annoying, his charm existed from beginning to end. The writer is obviously trying to explore many of the hero’s life in the restricted area. “The Independent” said that this is a lifelong, exciting novel. In various events experienced by the fictional Adolescent Hitler, Mailer explores the psychological state of the most evil person in history. By Dieter’s eyes, Mailer unfolds the narrative of the story. Ditt accepted Satan’s commission to train the evil that Hitler had just sprouted. But in this study of middle-class dysfunctions in Austria in the 19th century, the real dominating soul was Freud. Hitler is the crystallization of an incestuous marriage, his father behave rude, dignified, his mother bohemian. Small Hitler had long liked feces, obsessed with power, love the Holocaust ... About this deformed soul, Mailer made a gloomy and charming sketch. Andrew O’Hagan, British novelist. August 8, 2007 The Times replied O’Hagan’s interviews with Mailer published in the Paris Review.
