A knowledge system model for analyzing existing radar systems has been developed. It is a computer program called ASTA. It receives some data about system attributes, subsystem attributes, or signal parameters through human-machine dialogue and then deduces data for many of the other attributes it can derive from it step-by-step. ASTA can be used exclusively to analyze radar systems with its knowledge base of artificial intelligence, which contains many factual and empirical rules. These facts and rules of thumb determine how new information should be inferred from existing information. Knowledge of this database comes from radar design experts and analysis experts, but also from the radar design manual. The ASTA Knowledge Base represents an attempt by people to design radar as a function of observable operational characteristics. It is the first public publication in this area.
