The study of European medieval history in Japanese academia started in the early 20th century and has a history of more than 100 years so far and the academic inheritance of five or six generations. Compared with mainland China (about 50 years of history, two or three generations of academic heritage), it has four major characteristics: First, start early. Since the beginning of the Meiji Restoration, Japanese authorities have already started to introduce foreign experts and sent some students to go abroad for further studies. Second, start accurate. After Japan established the first modern university, Japan immediately introduced high-end talents to the West and paid close attention to the development of overseas historiography. Third, quick action. Japanese academics face the disciplinary features of history, through various ways to enhance the level of history. Fourth, the field is wide. All the countries and regions in medieval Europe are basically involved. The topics are not only caring for reality but also noticing specific problems.
