For the past few years, most of the Transnet State Transport Company (TFR) in South Africa has been investing in designated electric locomotives and diesel locomotive projects. From 1995 to 2008, the company did not purchase a new locomotive. By the first decade of the 21st century, most locomotives have reached the age of 24 to 40 years. In 2009, the company resumed purchasing new locomotives for use in coal and ore transportation. Recognizing the need to rehabilitate the road network to meet the large volume of freight demand, the company made a large-scale acquisition in 2014 and will deliver about 1,300 new locomotives to TFR in the next five years. Currently, TFR is receiving additional orders from GE Corp. 43
