At the beginning of the Eastern Han Dynasty (25– 220), Liu Xiu, Emperor Guangwu of Han, sent Geng He, one of his mightiest generals, to defeat a local warlord named Zhang Bu.
Zhang Bu took control of 12 states in Shandong and owned the army whose power could match Geng He’s royal army. After hearing of Geng He’s advent, he organized his main force to defend important fortresses and cities, ready to fight against Geng He.
Geng He first overcame the fortress called Zhu’a, and then he took out two important cities Lixia and Linzi with tactics. The harsh situation got on Zhang Bu’s nerves so much that he personally led his army for the counterattack to take Linzi back.
The two sides had a furious and fatal battle outside Linzi. During the battle, Geng He got an arrow on his leg, but he refused to retreat. Instead, he cut off the arrow with his sword and continued to fight alongside his soldiers.
Liu Xiu heard of the battle around Linzi and led a troop personally to the aid. Before the arrival of the assistant force, Geng He’s subordinate Chen Jun thought of stopping the battle for while to avoid the intensive offense of Zhang Bu’s mighty army till the assistant force arrived.
But Geng He thought that they should not leave the trouble for others. He continued the battle and finally drove Zhang Bu back. When Liu Xiu’s army arrived in Linzi, Geng He and his soldiers were forming lines to greet the emperor.
Liu Xiu was very glad and praised Geng He: “We all knew how Han Xin helped found the Han Dynasty. Now the general’s talent and skill could even match Han Xin’s. When you said you could defeat Zhang Bu at the start, I thought you were boasting and the plan was too ambitious to be realized. Now I know that people with strong will could succeed in everything they want.
