Advanced sensor synthesis techniques derived from the Ballistic Missile Defense Assessment and Flight Experiment (SAWAFE) funded by the Ballistic Missile Defense Agency (BMDO) can be converted to electronic warfare and even civilian. Developers at SAWAFE have developed this advanced sensor synthesis technology that enables the assembly of very light, tiny sensors and associated electronics directly onto the composite. If electronic warfare and other sensors can be made to the skin of an airplane, that innovation could be applied to the “smart skin” scheme long sought. The commercial use of this device is that its technology can be used to develop gust sensors that allow the aircraft to bypass vortices on the flight path.
