AOB (Ocean Acoustic Buoy) is a single node in an “intelligent” buoyancy network for acoustic monitoring, rapid environmental measurement (REA) and underwater communications. AOB is a lightweight surface buoy with a vertical acoustic receiver array and several temperature sensors that can be dropped or manually deployed from a boat. The data received after GPS calibration is stored locally and processed by on-board dedicated DSP hardware. AOB can exchange data with each other over a local area network including waterborne, sea-based (say, other AOBs) and airborne or land-based nodes, enabling all users to integrate in a seamless network. Dedicated software enables AOBs to be used in complex tasks such as passive or multivariate static acoustic monitoring, acoustic observations for REA ocean forecasting and model calibration, acoustic inversion of underwater and body of water, underwater communications and joint target tracking . During both the coastal REA sea trials in 2003 (Mediterranean) and 2004 (Atlantic) and the high-frequency underwater communications trials in 2005 (Hawaii), AOB worked successfully for several days. Data collected at the sea show that the AOB is a versatile, rugged and easy to operate device for a wide range of underwater acoustic applications.
