随着低损耗光导纤维和长寿命半导体激光器的研制成功,光纤通信于八十年代初正式进入商用阶段,短短十几年的时间,以其通信容量大、中继距离长、保密性好、抗干扰能力强等独特优点,得到了迅猛发展,工作模式由多模到单模,使用波长由08~0.9um短波长发展到1.0~1.6um的长波长区域,传输制式由准同步的PDH到SDH同步序列。从而使光纤中继距离由几公里到上百公里,传输速率达10Gbit/s以上,已成为电信网的主要传输手段。整个电信网络的光纤化已成必然趋势。
